You'll be Much Better than Us

Having a personal, in-person conversation with a former head of BPOM was never on my 2025 bingo list—yet, last Tuesday, I checked it off. We had a great 90-minute conversation over lunch at Champaca Coffee and Eatery, covering campus life, personal matters, and work. I won’t mention their name for privacy reasons, so I’ll refer to them as 'this distinguished individual' throughout this post.

At first, I hesitated when this distinguished individual texted me about their agenda and confirmed if we could meet. I wasn’t feeling my best appearance-wise. Hormonal acne was acting up, and I had a scar from Arina’s hairpin scratch on my left cheek. I know it might sound shallow, but my confidence took a hit.

I enjoyed listening to this distinguished individual's stories about their academic and professional journey. It felt surreal to have someone I’ve looked up to sitting right in front of me, sharing their experiences. It made me want to embrace every step of my own journey and give my best in the process.

After the meeting, when I arrived home, I texted this distinguished individual, saying thank you. They reassured me that I'll be okay for my future study. Here's what they wrote me back:
"Senang sekali tadi bisa ngobrol2 Neti. Neti akan sukses S2 di UK. Tak diragukan lagi. Best wishes ya 🙏"
They also sent a photo with some influential figures in BPOM whom they met earlier. I replied, saying that those in the picture were the people I've been looking up to. Do you know their reply?
"You'll be much better than us. 🙏"

It was.... such a beautiful prayer for me.  I'll definitely give my best effort. Thank you!
